Volunteer Firefighter Duties
Volunteer firefighters must be physically and mentally capable of responding to emergencies and performing firefighting duties as well as other strenuous or stressful tasks to protect life and property. The role involves performing duties under hazardous conditions, following orders from superiors, and adhering to Standard Operating Guidelines and department policies to ensure safety and compliance. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Responding to fire, or other emergencies and working as directed by Fire Service officers.
- Attend and participate in regular training, maintenance work, and public education events.
- Communicating fire and safety concerns to the Fire Prevention Division, and report equipment issues to the Station Officer.
- Complete investigation reports, regularly inspect protective gear, and act independently in extreme emergency situations.
- Note: Volunteer firefighters are compensated for attending training, responding to emergencies, and station duties.
Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Be eighteen (18) years or older?
- Possess a valid Ontario driver's licence (minimum G class) with satisfactory driving record.
- Live and /or work in an area within a reasonable response distance to a Leeds 1000 Islands Fire Station. (Locations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis).
- No criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
- Successfully complete all required certifications and requirements.

- Stage 1 - Recruitment Information Session

- Option 1 - Fill out our application form on-line
- Option 2 - Fill out an application package and email it to: fireadmin@townshipleeds.on.ca, or drop it off at the Township Office - 1233 Prince Street, Lansdowne, ON (Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).
- Stage 3 - Aptitude Appraisal (Written Testing)
The aptitude appraisal is a short questionnaire designed to assess your ability to understand written and spoken information, technical and mechanical skills, and reading, reasoning, and math abilities. A score of 70% or greater is required to advance to the next stage. - Stage 4 - Job Specific Physical Testing
Candidates must submit a signed Medical Examination Report prior to completing the physical testing. Candidates are not able to complete physical testing without a medical report on file. See Job Specific Physical Testing Tab for a demonstration video. - Stage 5 - Interview
Upon receiving a conditional acceptance:
- Proof of valid Ontario driver's license, in good standing.
- Submission of current 3-year Drivers Abstract
- Submission of Employment Vulnerable Sector check
