Recycling Program

Recycling helps protect our environment, conserve natural resources, and reduce the amount of waste in landfills.  By recycling every day items like paper, plastic, glass and metal, you help create a cleaner, more sustainable community.

Our local landfills will take your recycling.

What can you recycle

  • Stoves, refrigerators, freezers, hot water tanks, dehumidifiers, washers, dryers, and air conditioner (A/C) units with freon/refrigerant removed and certified CFC free.

We accept household, single-use and rechargeable, batteries such as AA, AAA, C, D cells at all waste disposal sites.

From (mid-April to the end of May) disposal bins for boat wrap are provided at the waste disposal site in Lansdowne, Clark's Marina, and Peck's Marina. 
Boat wrap bins remain at Clark’s Marina and the Lansdowne waste disposal site until after the long weekend. 

We accept brush, stumps, and wood under 7.5 cm in diameter. 

We accept leaves, grass clippings, and garden waste (e.g., weeds, plants, flowers). These may be bagged in a compostable bag, or remain loose, and placed on the garden waste pile.

Remove staples and tape. Flatten and bundle.  Clean pizza boxes are also accepted.

The following items are accepted at the Lansdowne and Lyndhurst waste sites.

  • cell phones, cordless phones, corded phones, answering machines
  • computers, laptops, monitors
  • digital cameras and projectors
  • home theatre systems
  • iPods, tablets, mp3 players
  • keyboards, mice, trackballs
  • radios, stereos, CD and DVD players
  • photocopiers, fax machines
  • printers, scanners, modems
  • small household appliances (anything with a plug or battery)
  • TVs, VCRs

The Escott waste site does not accept electronic recycling.

We accept the following glass and metal:

  • aluminum and tin cans of all sizes
  • aluminum pie plates and foil
  • beverage bottles
  • broken glass, windows and mirrors need to be boxed, taped, and tagged in household garbage)
  • clear and coloured glass containers
  • empty, clean and dry paint cans
  • food jars and lids

We accept clean wood and lumber without nails, screws or staples.  Pressure treated wood is not accepted; it may be disposed of as Construction waste for a fee.

We accept your dinner plate leftovers.

  • meat, poultry, fish, dairy, vegetables, bones, food scraps, bread, coffee filters, coffee grounds, tea bags
  • food-soiled paper including single-use kitchen towels, napkins, uncoated paper plates and cups
  • small quantities of cooking oil

Organic waste can be disposed of in compostable bags or dumped loosely into the Green Bin. 

We accept plastics with the symbols #1 through #7.

We also accept your plastic grocery bags. Please put all your bags inside one bag for disposal.

We accept the following paper products:

  • books (soft and hard cover and telephone books)
  • boxboard (including cereal and cracker boxes, rolls from toilet tissue and paper towels - flattened with liner removed)
  • flyers and inserts
  • fine paper
  • newspapers, magazines and catalogues
  • paper egg cartons
  • polycoated paper including milk and juice cartons along with tetra packs such as juice boxes (with screw tops removed) and clean paper plates

  • all ferrous and non-ferrous
  • metals
  • doors
  • framing
  • metal coat hangers
  • push lawn mowers
  • rebar and structural steel

We accept styrofoam with the symbols #1 through #7. We recommend that you bag your styrofoam in clear plastic bags to keep it contained. We do not accept 'popcorn' or colored styrofoam.

All makes and sizes of tires are accepted at the Lansdowne and Lyndhurst waste sites. Rims may be attached.

Do not recycle

  • gift wrap paper
  • pink insulation
  • plastic bubble wrap, zip lock style bags, woven plastic sacks
  • plastic toys without a recycling label, plastic glasses, plastic CD cases
  • plastic cutlery
  • 'popcorn' styrofoam packaging
  • window glass/panes

  • agricultural bale wrap
  • asbestos
  • asphalt and/or pavement
  • boats
  • car bodies
  • car or boat batteries
  • cement blocks or bricks
  • concrete slabs/pieces
  • dead animals
  • farm machinery
  • fill, top soil, clay
  • fluorescent bulbs, tubes
  • hazardous waste (includes propane tanks)
  • industrial waste
  • large stumps or brush over 7.5 cm 
  • railway ties
