Burn Permit Renewal

All residents are required to obtain a free Open-Air Burn Permit to conduct any burning within the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands.  Permits must be renewed each year after January 1.

Committee of Adjustment

The Committee of Adjustment considers and makes decisions on applications for minor variances and applications for enlargement or extension of any existing legal non-conforming building or structure. The Committee is comprised of five Township citizens who are appointed by Council and granted authority by the Planning Act.

The Committee is authorized to grant a minor variance if all of the following criteria, commonly referred to as the 'four tests,' are met:

  • the variance is minor
  • the variance is desirable for the appropriate development or use of the property
  • the general intent and purpose of the Zoning By-Law is maintained
  • the general intent and purpose of the Official Plan is maintained

The Committee will refuse an application if, in its opinion, one or more of the above criteria have not been met. The Committee cannot grant exemptions to the by-law which, in effect, would constitute a change of zoning. In such cases property owners may wish to make an application for a Zoning By-Law Amendment.

The Committee of Adjustment Schedule has been prepared and lists the hearing dates and submission deadlines for applications and all other required information.

  • Note 1 : Dates are subject to change/cancelled at the discretion of staff.
  • Note 2:  The regular hearing of the Committee of Adjustment in December is moved to an early date to accommodate the schedule of staff and members.
  • Note 3:  Boat ride dates are tentative for April and October depending upon the weather. Applications for water access only properties may be deferred until weather permits a boat ride site inspection. From November to March, applicants will be required to submit pictures and videos of the property for review. Upon review of the pictures and videos, the Committee may still decide to defer the application until a boat ride can be scheduled for when weather permits.
