Leeds and the Thousand Islands Council Awards Youth Bursaries
June 17, 2024, Lansdowne, ON – The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands Council awarded bursaries to three exemplary youth at the June 16th Council meeting.
The Township prides itself in the ability to recognize young people for their successes and to support them with their future goals with the Youth Bursary Program.
We had several exemplary bursary applicants who demonstrated their academic achievements, volunteerism, leadership, and engagement in extra-curricular activities and had a difficult decision in selecting the top three. The three recipients are awarded honoraria of $1000, $600, and $400 dollars to put towards their post secondary education.
The top placed applicant is Mairin McConnell. Mairin is a student at Gananoque District Secondary School and will be attending University of Toronto.
The second placed applicant is Courtney Hoekstra. Courtney is a student at Rideau District Secondary School and will be attending Queen's University.
The third placed applicant is Jory Leakey. Jory is a student at Thousand Island Secondary School and will be attending University of Ottawa.
Mayor Smith-Gatcke stated, “The Township is proud to recognize three outstanding young individuals who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in civic engagement, academic excellence, leadership, and extracurricular involvement. Each of these recipients has shown remarkable commitment to their community and a strong dedication to personal growth and achievement. Their contributions inspire us all and reflect the values we strive to nurture in the next generation of leaders. As they take their next steps, I am confident they will continue to make a positive impact. The support from the Township is a small way to recognize their achievements. On behalf of Council, I congratulate Mairin, Courtney and Jory. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for these remarkable young people.”
