Posted on Monday March 23, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Media Release 5

March 23, 2020, Lansdowne, ON The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands declares a Municipal State of Emergency in accordance with the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, at 2:00 on Monday, March 23, 2020.

Declaring an emergency affords the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands additional powers to protect the health and safety of all individuals, families and businesses.

Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke remarks “I am concerned for our residents and businesses; we are a border community and there are a large number of travellers returning to Canada through our Township. People returning from out of Country are to self-isolate at home for 14 days and ask family, friends or neighbours to safely drop off supplies to you.”

She reminds residents “Please stay home and self-isolate, engage in social distancing and only go outside for essentials, such as food and medical appointments. This is required to keep each other safe and healthy and to flatten the curve.”

The Township is working to protect the health and safety of all members of the community. This decision is being made as part of the Township’s actions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Declaring a State of Emergency is an important measure in supporting the Province of Ontario and the Ministry of Health in facing the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to the declaration residents are encouraged to do the following:

  • Check official resources for COVID-19 updates;
  • Follow recommended measures to control the spread of the virus (such as social distancing and washing hands with soap frequently).

The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands Emergency Control Group will continue to meet regularly to review and update information regarding COVID-19. The Township will continue to monitor the ongoing situation and update the public accordingly.

If you are experiencing any symptoms, please make use of the Ontario Self-Assessment Tool, telephone 1-866-797-0000, or contact the local public health unit.
