Before you burn, call 613-704-1812 for burn conditions.

Open air burning requires a permit. Anyone 18 years and older, who is the owner of a property within the Township, or who has been authorized in writing by the owner, may apply for a permit. 

The permit is free and is valid until December 31. The permit must be renewed each calendar year. Renew my Permit.

Each type of burn permit has specific guidelines. Please review the guidelines and criteria prior to applying for an Open Air Burn Permit.

Guidelines and criteria

A burn permit can be obtained, free of charge, online or at our Municipal office:

  • 1233 Prince St., Lansdowne
    Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Open air burning of brush is not allowed in villages, mobile home parks, subdivisions or any other built up area.

The permit holder:

  • must call (613) 704-1812 on the day you plan to burn
  • must not start or maintain an incinerator/brush fire between sunset and sunrise
  • must only burn wood or wood by-products
  • must not burn when the wind speed exceeds 25 km per hour or smoke disturbs neighbouring properties
  • must not burn materials that include petroleum products, plastic, rubber or other materials prohibited by the Ministry of Environment
  • must keep suitable extinguishing equipment available
  • must constantly supervise burn until fully extinguished

 Type of fires

Open air burn or brush pile

  • must not exceed 3 metres in length and width and 2 metres in height
  • must not be less than 75 metres from buildings, hedges, property lines, fences, overhead wires and or roads unless the material to be burned is 1 cubic metre or less in volume, then the fire maybe located 10 metres from combustibles and 20 metres from property lines

Campfires 

  • must be kept to a maximum size of 1 metre in diameter and height and must be confined to metal, concrete, stone or brick
  • the ground must be cleared of combustible material and lined with sand or mineral soil under and 1 metre beyond the campfire perimeter
  • must be 10 metres from all property lines, roads, and overhead wires
  • must be 3 metres from all buildings, hedges, trees and fences
  • must not be operated earlier than sunrise and must be extinguished by 12 a.m.

Incinerator

  • must be constructed of non-combustible material
  • be similar in construction to a 45 gallon drum with a volume not greater than 1 cubic metre unless otherwise approved
  • be kept in good condition with no cracks or holes in the metal
  • must have a heavy mesh screen with grid openings of not larger than 5 mm over openings
  • be kept 20 metres from property lines and 10 metres from hedges, trees and overhead wires
  • the area around the site must be clear of any vegetation for a minimum of 2 metres

Outdoor appliances

  • openings in any appliance shall be completely covered at all times by a suitable metal mesh with grid openings of not larger than 5 mm
  • must be located on a non-combustible surface extending beyond the appliance to a distance equal to the height on all sides
  • must be 10 metres from all property lines, roads and overhead wires
  • must be 3 metres from any buildings, hedges, trees and fences
  • must not be operated earlier than sunrise and must be extinguished by 12 a.m.
